What is Friendship! Effort! Victory!? – It’s a podcast about the manga and inner workings of Weekly Shonen Jump, with an eye towards accessibility and soothing camp tones.

What is this episode about? – It’s about Shouei Ishioka’s Belmonde le Visiteur, a 2007 manga about a professional torturer in 17th century france, and his witch-powers and magical sword. If you’ve read One Piece and know who Trafalgar Law is then you basically know how the sword works. I talk about what it was, what went wrong, and what if anything there is in it that’s worth paying attention to. I also go on much longer than I normally do with a minisode, coming in at just under the size of the smallest standard episode. But that’s no bad thing now, is it?

Where are the show notes? – Just below the Rivieré Saint-Michel!

-You can, if you wish, buy Belmonde le Visiteur from various sellers over at Amazon Japan, along with Shouei’s other work for Shueisha’s now-defunct Monthly Shonen Jump, Leo the Gold.
-You can learn more about Weekly Shonen Jump over at the wiki page for it, which is almost slightly reliable.

-As always the music used in this episode is from Jump Ultimate Stars. The intro is [INTO PLANET] and the outro, appropriately is ‘Loser’

Do we get an episode gallery this time? – Um… Yeah, okay. Not much though, because the only scans I can find are low-quality fan-translations, and they’re not much to look at (also you know I don’t encourage such things openly):

Belmonde using his Lundi sword to cut past Celine and get the man taking her hostage. Looks good. Deceptively so. An example of how Belmonde can cut people up without killing them. A straight-forward challenge this, for the victim to merely walk forward The flesh dominoes, probably the best torture of the series and the one that really sells what could have been.D'artagnan and Athos in better times. D'artagnan is well-designed and kinda rubbish, Athos is poorly designed and probably the best character in the series.

What is Friendship! Effort! Victory!? – It’s a podcast about the manga and inner workings of Weekly Shonen Jump, with an eye towards accessibility and soothing camp tones.

What is this episode about? – It’s about Nobuhiro Watsuki’s Buso Renkin, an alchemy-battle series that’s a bit of everything; Action, Romance, Comedy, Romance, Romance, it’s got it all. I delve into what the series is and some bits that worked for me, as well as explain Watsuki’s approach to candidly explaining his methods and creative processes in the bonus pages. It’s also secretly an episode about one man trying his hardest to remember stuff from a series he didn’t fit in his suitcase when he moved all the way around the world.

Where are the show notes? – Just look below this line!

-You can learn more about Buso Renkin at its fairly comprehensive wikia, which mostly deals with anime stuff but certainly covers everything you’d need to know, including the oddity that is the Ps2 video-game only child of Kazuki and Tokiko,  Soya Muto. He’s utterly pointless
-Buso Renkin is incredibly available, purchasable in both book and animation form from your retailer of choice. But I’m lazy, so I’ll just link to amazon (UK) (US) (CA)
-If you’re American or Canadian, you can also get Buso Renkin digitally at a delightfully cheap price from Viz Manga
-You can learn more about Weekly Shonen Jump over at the wiki page for it, which is almost slightly reliable.

What is Friendship! Effort! Victory!? – It’s a podcast about the manga and inner workings of Weekly Shonen Jump, with an eye towards accessibility and soothing camp tones.

What is a minisode? – It’s a smaller episode, that discards all the inner workings and analysis stuff to just talk about a manga for what it is, be it good, bad, ugly, funny, heartbreaking and such. The minisodes exist to alternate weeks with the full episodes to give me a chance to work on those longer, more involved pieces without losing any momentum that weekly episodes would otherwise give it.

What is this episode about? – Why it’s about Kurando Kengo’s completely underwhelming 2003 series ✰SANTA!✰, a title that has absolutely nothing to do with christmas at all. Mostly I talk about its failings and the possibly unintentional ripping off of the Kishimoto brothers. I also try to look at the bright side of it. A little.

Where are the show notes? – At the bottom of your stocking, with the satsuma.

-Want to know more about ✰SANTA!✰? No. No, you really don’t. But you can buy it from sellers on Amazon JP, if you’re as intent on understanding my feelings on it.
-You can learn more about Weekly Shonen Jump over at the wiki page for it, which is almost slightly reliable.

Is there an episode gallery this time? – Not really, finding good scans is hard, though if you look, there’s pics from a dodgy chinese-english scanlation floating around. Google is your friend. But here’s the volume covers anyway:

What is Friendship! Effort! Victory!? – It’s a podcast about the manga and inner workings of Weekly Shonen Jump, with an eye towards accessibility and soothing camp tones.

What is this episode about? – Why, it’s about Yudetamago’s never-ending epic Kinnikuman, a superhuman wrestling manga that executes both comedy and brutality like one would execute a spinning toe hold. I switch up the format a fair bit by diving straight into Kinnikuman, peppering it with the history and inner workings parts as I go along. I look over the popular KinKeshi/M.U.S.C.L.E. merchandise related to the series, as well as its numerous resurrections that have occurred over the last decade.

Where are the shoIT DOESN’T MATTER WHERE THE SHOW NOTES ARE!

-If you want to know more about Kinnikuman, you can’t go wrong with the extensive wiki and wikia sites for it, which cover a lot of the goings-on of the manga in some detail.
-When it comes to KinKeshi/M.U.S.C.L.E. you can’t really find people who know more about it than those lot over at the Little Rubber Guys forum.
-Of course there’s also the option to relive nostalgia and buy some of you own from M.U.S.C.L.E.figures dot com. Go on the ‘Meat‘ page for links a whole bunch of cool related stuff.
-Kinnikuman might not be available in english but the cult-hit sequel, Ultimate Muscle, certainly kind of still is! Get it from Amazon (UK) (US) (CA) and if you’re really brave try and hunt down the OOP volumes off of sites like ebay or something
-Oh and you *can* get Kinnikuman in Japanese if that’s your thing. The new volumes (38 onwards) are pretty easy to read despite the language barrier. Wrestling’s like that. (JP)

What is Friendship! Effort! Victory!? – It’s a podcast about the manga and inner workings of Weekly Shonen Jump, with an eye towards accessibility and soothing camp tones.

What is this episode about? – It’s about the entirety of 2012 in Weekly Shonen Jump, in which I do my best to summarise everything memorable that happened. I may skip over a bunch of anniversaries where I couldn’t think of anything to say, but by and large it’s all in here.

Where are the show notes? – Just down here.

-Another big ups to the Weekly Jump Reader’s Journal, whose archive of ToC listings was a great help to getting this episode done.
